flute, recorded loon calls

First release from the album "Flute in the Wild" a project that is a celebration of the wild and beautiful spaces of Canada. I invited four fantastic Canadian classical voices to express their experience of our shared landscapes in music for flute. Loons and the Northern Lights, Ojibway stories and the Red Turtle Drum, lonely vistas atop Newfoundland rock, and a hike along a wild river under the gentle mist of a waterfall. Welcome to Canada through a flute lens!

I gave "Calling" it’s Toronto debut at Heliconian Hall with the original recording of the loons by John Neville. For this recording we took it outside, right to Georgian Bay and recorded in-situ and added some extra HD loons. Some local crickets came along for the ride.

From the composer: The inspiration for 'Calling' came in a conversation with a European composer about currency. I was showing her Canada’s one dollar coin, with the loon emblazoned, and realized that she would never have heard a loon call. The call is so haunting and beautiful and holds a special place in the hearts of many Canadians as an evocation of our precious wilderness.
